Union and West End Cemetery - Hurricane Sandy

My name is Everette H. Carr, I am presently serving as the President of the Union and West End cemetery Association. The Union and West End Cemetery was initially organized in 1854 and is located at the corner of 10th and chew Streets in Allentown, PA.

This historical cemetery in center city Allentown is 157 years old. There are more than 20,000 former citizens of Allentown buried in these hallowed grounds. There are five Veterans of the American Revolution buried in the cemetery. Numerous veterans of the War of 1812 and 714 Civil War Veterans. Veterans of the Mexican-American War, WWI, World War II, the Korean War, and the Viet Nam war.

The 714 Civil War Veterans buried in the Union and West End Cemetery comprise the largest number of civil War Veterans buried in a private cemetery in the State of Pennsylvania. This number of veterans buried in a single cemetery is second only to the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, PA. This alone, plus its age, should qualify the Union and West End Cemetery as a “National Historic Cemetery”. Yet, the cemetery does not qualify for this distinction. But this is a discussion for another day.

As you all know, Hurricane Sandy was a devastating Storm that tore across New Jersey and New York and slammed into Pennsylvania causing devastating damage. While we are sympathetic to our Pennsylvania neighbors, this is about the damage and destruction to the Union and West End Cemetery in Allentown.

View a slideshow of the destruction that Hurricane Sandy caused to the All Volunteer Non-profit cemetery. Then view a slideshow of the efforts of volunteers to deal with the damage caused to the cemetery. I assure you that you will be awed by the devastation and encouraged by the efforts of volunteers to restore the cemetery.

Paul Begala on the Five Stages of GOP Grief

This was sent to me by a dear friend so I felt compelled to post it even though I do not necessarily agree with it in total. In fact I take exception to some parts, but none-the less, here it is in all it's glory:

Paul Begala on the Five Stages of GOP Grief
by Paul Begala Nov 6, 2012 11:30 PM EST
Losing sucks—and healing is hard. Paul Begala offers some friendly advice to his Republican friends on how to work through their political heartbreak.

The most powerful and profound words of the 2012 election were spoken by Michelle Obama: “Being president,” she said, “doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.” So does running for president. Character is shown in adversity, and President Obama, who took office in the most adverse of circumstances; who stumbled critically in the first debate; who was hit with a depression in his first days of his term and a hurricane in the last, has shown his character. With his relentless, gifted, remarkable team he has accomplished a near-miracle—winning a second term with neither peace nor prosperity to run on.

I am deeply impressed and of course happy. For me this is the best thing since canned beer. But I want to devote this space to my Republican friends. As another president who once drove you crazy used to say, “I feel your pain.”

Now it’s time to reveal your character. A loss is tough. Sure you had some forewarning, especially after Rush Limbaugh guaranteed victory. That was when you knew things were bad. “Common sense,” he bellowed, “tells me this election isn’t gonna be close—and it shouldn’t be.” The last guy who was as wrong in a prediction as Rush was when General Custer said “I bet there’s no Sioux over that hill, let’s head over there!”

So in an effort to help, Dr. Paul the campaign psychologist is here to walk you through your five stages of political grief. And don’t worry about paying me. I’ll be reimbursed by Obamacare because a) Obamacare is not going to be repealed; and b) the GOP’s loss was a pre-existing condition.

Stage 1: Denial. Right now, you are denying you lost. Stop. You lost. You really lost. You lost like the Eagles did Monday night against the Saints. And your denials are sadder than Lindsay Lohan’s. The votes weren’t rigged (right-wingers seem to own all the voting machine companies anyway). The media didn’t hand it to Obama; after all, the Number One cable news channel, Fox, is right-wing. The Number One newspaper, the Wall Street Journal, also has a right-wing editorial slant (and is owned by the same guy who owns Fox News). The Number One talk radio show is Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity is Number Two, and Glenn Beck is Number Three. When you control all the largest media outlets, it’s time to stop grousing about liberal media bias.

Mitt Romney's 2012 concession speech. I know you can’t believe you lost to Obama. Again. I can only imagine how humiliating, how disconcerting it is—especially if you live in the right-wing bubble. It’s bad enough you couldn’t beat the Kenyan-Muslim-Marxist in 2008; this time you couldn’t beat a Kenyan-Muslim-Marxist who’s still digging out from the worst economic collapse of our lifetimes.

Stage 2: Anger. My favorite. Most of the right-wingers I know run the emotional gamut from pissed-off to furious. Not a lot of smiles from you all even on the best of days. It’s not a good sign when Ann Coulter is your Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. I know you’re angry, but at whom? Mitt Romney? That would be a good start. While he had one stellar debate, he was mostly a phony and a stiff on the stump. But you knew that when you nominated him. You also knew the libs (including the Super PAC I advised, Priorities USA Action) would zero-in on his record as a layoff artist. For future reference, the only thing worse than being the incumbent president during a time of high unemployment is being a former CEO who laid off thousands of people.

Stage 5: Accept that you blew an historic opportunity—that in a terrible economic environment you still couldn't do what Reagan and Clinton did: defeat an incumbent president.

But if you’re smart about it, you should be angry at your base. Sure, they’re committed (or they would be if we had a fully functioning mental health system). But they’re killing you with moderates. They nominated people who believe in “legitimate rape” and that a pregnancy resulting from rape is a gift from God. It may feel better to vent your anger at the left, but it makes no sense. They did their job; they won. Your base let you down; they led you astray. Here’s the dirty little secret: if your base is increasing in ideological zealotry and decreasing in size, it’s not a base. It’s a fringe group. Romney might be president-elect today if he had stood up to Rush Limbaugh when the radio host viciously attacked Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown law student who dared to stand up for contraceptive rights.

Stage 3: Bargaining. This might get you somewhere. Start bargaining with the voters you have alienated. Presidents Reagan and George W. Bush helped move the old Republican Party toward the strong pro-Israel position it has today—and earned the votes of some pro-Israel Americans who used to vote Democratic. So bargain with Latinos: support the DREAM Act, stop demonizing undocumented residents, return to the Bush-McCain position of supporting comprehensive immigration reform. Bargain with young people: stop trying to kill Pell Grants, stop trying to ban funding for contraception, stop demonizing gays—in fact, embrace marriage equality.

Okay, I’m plainly bargaining with you, which is not what’s supposed to be happening. I understand the GOP cannot become the liberal party. But you have to accommodate the rising American electorate. Face it: today is not the 50s you long for—(and for some right-wingers the 50s they long for is the 1850s). Latinos, African-Americans, younger voters, unmarried women: these are the pillars of the Obama majority. Why not pull one of those pillars out? Ronald Reagan reached out to blue collar, ethnic union members—and created the Reagan Democrats. Why not take a page from the Gipper?

Stage 4: Depression. This is pointless. I know you want to lick your wounds, but nobody will follow you if you simply lie on your hammock and have Jeeves the butler bring you more caviar while you whine to Lovey about the country going to H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks. Instead of sinking into self-loathing, show that you’re relevant. Cut a deal. That’s right, compromise. Put in place a sensible, moderate, long-term plan to reduce the God-awful deficit you helped to create with massive tax cuts for the rich, two wars, and a recession. Instead of going into depression, work to get us out of the one you caused.

Stage 5: Acceptance. The sooner you get to this the better. The voters rejected you. They’re just not that into you. They’re the pretty cheerleader and you’re the angry Goth kid. They are not going to date you—especially if you keep being so creepy to them. Accept that you had an historic opportunity and you blew it. Accept that in the worst economic environment in nearly a century you still couldn’t do what Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did in milder recessions: defeat an incumbent president. And accept that you need to change. That’s right, just like in the bad teen movie, you, the angry Goth kid, can become the wholesome all-American teen. Besides, you have a terrific bench. Chris Christie, Mitch Daniels, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Susana Martinez, Brian Sandoval. Maybe you can run one of your Midwestern governors like John Kasich or Scott Walker. Maybe a senator like John Thune—heck, he’s so gorgeous he makes Mitt Romney look like the Elephant Man. Or why not the only Republican candidate who ran in 2008 and who was never in the lead: Jon Huntsman? Huntsman has been a governor, a businessman, an ambassador. He speaks Mandarin and Moderate and could get a ton of Democratic votes.

Or not. You can stay in denial and run in 2016 on a ticket of Rand Paul and Michele Bachmann, and lose to… well, to anybody.

Now this is gloating. Most of it was self-serving prattle, but an interesting read nonetheless. It's always good to know what the other side thinks, and why..

I really love the kick-in-the-Republican-ass parody and sarcasm.

So, okay, I admit the GOP made some major mistakes. I also admit that the GOP candidates were not all that appealing, with one possible exception; Ron Paul. Had he won the nomination, he might have been able to carry the day!

Harry & Bess Truman

Harry & Bess

Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many, or more important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952 his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!

And so it goes...

Could this video be fake. It is a slap dash bit of out-takes without benefir of the complete text and therefore it could be slanted; words taken out of context. I really don't have the answer. Watch and decide for yourself.

New York Messenger Bike Race

The video that follows was posted to YouTube in 2006 by someone other than the publisher.

The publisher is Lucas Brunelle, an interesting adventurer that makes his living using helmet video cams and a bicycle. Lucas was not always a success in life and had a difficult upbringing. After you have viewed this video you may wish to check out his web site which brings his adventures to life. But before you begin to explore the wonders of the web site, first go to the left hand navigation bar and click on "About". Here you will read about Lucas' troubled youth, his racing abilities on a bike, his stint as a New York Bike Messenger and how that led to his ultimate success.

Or, put on your seat belt and just watch the most exciting and dangerous bike riding you will ever see. These guy's have got to have a death wish!

The video can be viewed in "Full Screen" format; place cusor over the video and click on the "Full Screen" symbol in the lower right hand corner. I warn you, it's scarrier!

Those of you not familiar with messenger bikes; the messengers ride similar bikes to those ridden by track bike racers; meaning single gear bikes with no brakes. Can you imagine?

Lucas, I can only speak for myself, but I live my life vicariously through you. I wish you well!

It looked like a sure win for Stewart (14) then it happened; He was carried to the wall and then was upside down. It appears that Trevor Bahn (29) took him to the wall. No! No! it was Michael Waltrip (55) that tagged him, Trevor just got caught up in it.

The only words that I can come up with describe this event is:

Holy Cow, WOW!, Chaotic, Crazy, Unbelieveable!

Democracy and the Constitution a lover's quarrel

Today, September 17, 2012 is the 225th anniversary of the signing of the final draft of the U. S. Constitution.

39 of 55 delegates that attended the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia affixed their signature to the Constitution. The signing of the Constitution by the Philadelphia delegates was followed by two years of intensive debate in a series of state ratifying conventions.

The above was extracted from an excellent article that appeared in the September 17, 2012 issue of the morning Call. On page 11 of the news section, Lenethea Matthews and Justin Rose, professors in the political science department at Muhlenberg, collaborated on an article about the adoption of the constition.

They go on to discuss the compromises required in an effort to attain a more balanced document. The 13th amendment was adopted in 1865, the 14th in 1868, the 15th, which abolished slavery in 1870.

They point out that while the constitutions "essential institutional features remain unchanged, the Constitution we have today is not the Constitution of 1787...."

"Instead, the Constitution continues to emerge in a lover's quarrel with democracy, one that brings into sharper focus the meaning of the words that continue to spark our imagination: "We the people of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union.""

The article continues by pointing out that amendments are neccessary changes made in the name of democracy. The 19th amendment (1920), for example, granting suffrage to women, the 24th (1964) prohibiting poll taxes, and the 26th (1971) lowering the voting age to 18.

Another direct quote: "In contemporary politics, the lover's quarrel between the Constitution and democracy is evidenced in judicial decision-making and in public debates in which we attempt to reconcile public policy with our philosophical ideals."

The Constitution is indeed a wonderful document that has served our great Nation for 225 years. Debates will continue as we try to sort out the extent and scope of its powers, but the document will live on to guide this great Nation well into the future. This is a document that every American should read and understand and then share with me my reverence for our Constitution.

Evelyn Tokar 1935-2011

You were one of the best things that ever happened to me in this life. The six years we had together were wonderful. We loved, we laughed, we shared so many things together. We explored, we sought out adventure, we were planning so many things in the future. We truly took delight in so many aspects of life; together!

I miss you terribly. I had no idea what life without you would be like. I learned that without you all of the fun and the joy in living have gone out of my life.

It will never again be as it was when we were together and that leaves me sad and empty.

As I sit here in front of your grave I realize that my life with you was better for your having been a part of it. So I take solace in the fact that we shared life together for six wonderfully amazing years. I loved you and still love you with all my heart and soul and the very fiber of my being.

I think of you often, I will miss you always and forever!

Once Upon a Time...

IT IS A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL MESSAGE!!

Once upon a time there was a girl who had four boyfriends.

She loved the fourth boyfriend the most and adorned him with rich robes and treated him to the finest of delicacies. She gave him nothing but the best.

She also loved the third boyfriend very much and was always showing him off to neighboring kingdoms. However, she feared that one day he would leave her for another.

She also loved her second boyfriend. He was her confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with her. Whenever this girl faced a problem, she could confide in him, and he would help her get through the difficult times.

The girl's first boyfriend was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining her wealth and kingdom. However, she did not love the first boyfriend, although he loved her deeply, she hardly took notice of him!

One day, the girl fell ill and she knew her time was short. She thought of her luxurious life and wondered, 'I now have four boyfriends with me, but when I die, will I be alone.'

Thus, she asked the fourth boyfriend, 'I loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?
'No way!', replied the fourth boyfriend, and he walked away without another word.

His answer cut like a sharp knife right into her heart.

The sad girl then asked the third boyfriend, 'I loved you all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?' 'No!', replied the third boyfriend. 'Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to marry someone else!' Her heart sank and turned cold.

She then asked the second boyfriend, 'I have always turned to you for help and you've always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?'

'I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!', replied the second boyfriend. 'At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave.'
His answer struck her Like a bolt of lightning, and the girl was devastated.

Then a voice called out: 'I'll go with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go.' The girl looked up, and there was her first boyfriend. He was very skinny as he suffered from malnutrition and neglect.

Greatly grieved, the girl said, 'I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!'

In truth, you have four boyfriends in your lives:

Your fourth boyfriend is your body. No matter how much time and effort you lavish in making it look good, it will leave you when you die.

Your third boyfriend is your possessions, status and wealth. When you die, it will all go to others.

Your second boyfriend is your family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for you, the furthest they can stay by you is up to the grave.

And your first boyfriend is your spirit. Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world.

However, your spirit is the only thing that will follow you where ever you go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of you that will follow you to the throne of God and continue with you throughout Eternity.

Thought for the day: Remember, when the world pushes you to your knees, you're in the perfect position to pray.

Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections.

Be Blessed Not Stressed

Boy Assaulted in Shower Comes Forward

By Marc Scolforo, Of The Associated Press
3:02 p.m. EDT, July 26, 2012
HARRISBURG — For months, the identity of the boy who was sexually assaulted in the locker-room showers by Jerry Sandusky was one of the biggest mysteries of the Penn State scandal. Now, for the first time, a man has come forward publicly to claim he was that boy, and is threatening to sue the university.
The man's lawyers said Thursday they have done an extensive investigation and gathered "overwhelming evidence" on details of the abuse by Sandusky, the former assistant football coach convicted of using his position at Penn State and as head of a youth charity to molest boys over a period of 15 years.
Jurors convicted Sandusky last month of offenses related to so-called Victim 2 largely on the testimony of Mike McQueary, who was a team graduate assistant at the time and described seeing the attack.
"Our client has to live the rest of his life not only dealing with the effects of Sandusky's childhood sexual abuse, but also with the knowledge that many powerful adults, including those at the highest levels of Penn State, put their own interests and the interests of a child predator above their legal obligations to protect him," the lawyers said in a news release.
They did not name their client, and The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sex crimes without their consent.
The university said it was taking the case seriously but would not comment on pending litigation.
University President Rodney Erickson and the board of trustees, a school spokesman said, "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims."
The statement from the man's attorneys said Victim 2 suffered "extensive sexual abuse over many years both before and after the 2001 incident Michael McQueary witnessed."
McQueary testified in December at a hearing that he had seen Sandusky and a boy, both naked, in a team shower after hearing skin-on-skin slapping sounds.
"I would have described that it was extremely sexual and I thought that some kind of intercourse was going on," McQueary said.
McQueary reported the abuse to school officials, including Paterno, but none of them told police. In a recent report conducted by former FBI Director Louis Freeh and commissioned by Penn State, the investigators excoriated Paterno and the other administrators for not attempting to identify Victim 2, saying it showed "a striking lack of empathy."
Trustees fired Paterno, who has since died, because he failed to do more about claims against Sandusky, and the scathing independent review said several top school officials looked the other way because they were afraid of bad publicity. The NCAA has vacated 112 Penn State wins.
In a pair of voice mails recorded last year, released with the statement and posted online by the lawyers, a voice that's purportedly Sandusky's expresses his love and says he wants to express his feelings "up front."
The voice mails are dated Sept. 12 and Sept. 19, less than two months before the former Penn State coach was arrested on child sex abuse charges. Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 sex abuse counts and awaits sentencing.
The second voice mail asks whether Victim 2 would like to attend Penn State's next game.
Sandusky left "numerous" voice mails for their client that fall, the attorneys said.
Before the trial, defense attorney Joe Amendola said he had met with a man he believed he might be Victim 2 and the man told him he had not been abused by Sandusky. Amendola said he was not convinced and did not intend to subpoena him, but also said Sandusky himself was insistent they had the right person.
The statement from Victim 2's lawyers leaves many questions unanswered, including whether he had been in contact with prosecutors before or during the trial, whether he remembers McQueary, and whether he is the same person who met with Amendola.
"Jerry Sandusky's abuse of Victim 2 and other children is a direct result of a conspiracy to conceal Sandusky's conduct and the decisions by top Penn State officials that facilitated and enabled his access to victims," the statement read. "We intend to file a civil lawsuit against Penn State University and others and to hold them accountable for the egregious and reckless conduct that facilitated the horrific abuse our client suffered."
The statement did not say when the lawsuit would be filed or contain details on what redress the plaintiff is seeking. The lawyers said they would not have further comment, and messages left for their spokesman were not immediately returned.
Several messages seeking comment from Amendola and Sandusky's other lawyer, Karl Rominger, were not immediately returned.
Prosecutors had said on several occasions they did not know the identity of the boy, and they offered no reaction to the lawyers' announcement Thursday.
"We can't comment, given both our ongoing criminal prosecutions and our ongoing investigation," said Nils Frederiksen, spokesman for the attorney general's office.
The attorneys who released the statement include several based in Philadelphia and in State College, home to Penn State's main campus — where the shower assault took place.

penn State's Football Program

In the Sports section of today's Morning Call (Tuesday, July 17) Bob Costas was quoted as saying "Penn State ought to have the good grace" to suspend its football program. James Carville stated in response; "that's a really dumb idea."

I have respect for Bob Costas as a sports announcer, but he really has no business chiming in on the Penn State scandal. I agree with James Carville; Bob, it is a really dumb idea and you should just stay the hell out of it!

The student athletes at Penn State should not be punished for something that happened many years before their time.

Costas indicated that if Penn State did not withdraw for a year or more. He went on to elaborate; "But if they don't, it's a pretty good bet that the NCAA will step in and render its version of the death penalty."

The NCAA has no authority in this matter. So far, the NCAA has made no comment with respect to the Sandusky matter and it shouldn't, in my opinion.

Carvell commented that "Lives have been ruined, so the answer to it is, 'Let's go out and ruin some more lives.'" "Let's take a kid , a college football player, who was in second grade when this happened and let's suspend the program." He went on to suggest that we cancel all contracts so that every vendor, every motel owner in Happy Valley and lets ruin all their lives in retaliation. "This is a really bad idea," according to Carvell. I happen to agree!

Skip Bayless, an ESPN commentator stated in response to a comment by Stephen A. Smith (another ESPN analyst) as to whether the program should be shut down by the NCAA or the Pennsylvania Legislature: "This is the most absurd overreaction I could have imagined. This is the most evil ongoing crime ever associated with the world of sports. But you're connecting the wrong dots. The NCAA regulated one thing and one thing only. And that is competitive on field advantage gained from any of this ongoing evil? None was."

I am ambivalent about the removal of JoePa's statue; but we should bear in mind that the statue is a tribute to his lifelong football career and his and Penn State's accomplishments, not a statue praising his moral character.

What is your opinion on the Penn State football program; should Penn State play or not?

Take Me Fishing!

A few years back I created a plaque for each of my grandsons. All of my grandchildren call me Gran D'. The theme was; "Take me Fishing!"

My oldest grandson is Everette John Papsun (EJ) who will be 22 in September 2012.

The youngest of my grandchildren is Sebastian Nicholas Pompa and he will be 18 in August 2012.

I truly miss the times when EJ, Sebastian and I would go fishing together. We never caught a lot of fish and we never landed the whopper we were hoping for, but the times we spent together were the absolute best of times.

The Seasons of your Life

Life can be compared to the characteristics of the seasons. There are times when you are faced with cold, hard, stormy weather in your life. Then there are times when you can make a new fresh start and grow. So when you are facing tough times remember that God has deemed a time for everything under heaven. You can't give up when in the winter of your life because you could miss the promise of your spring and the beauty of your summer.

Roger Kipling's Poem; "IF"

Rodger Kimpling's poem: "IF"

"If"

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too:

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;

If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same:.

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings,

And never breathe a word about your loss:

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!

"If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much:

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

Rudyard Kipling

Armstrong charged with doping by USADA

Armstrong charged with doping by USADA
By: Cycling NewsPublished: June 13, 21:14,

Seven-time Tour de France winner banned from competitions

Lance Armstrong has been formally charged with doping by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) according to the Washington Post. The seven-time Tour de France winner has been banned from competition effective immediately, including triathlons which he has been racing since he retired from pro road cycling in 2011.

The Washington Post reported on a copy of a 15-page letter sent to Lance Armstrong by USADA on Tuesday. In it, the agency alleged that some of Armstrong's blood samples from 2009 and 2010 were "fully consistent with blood manipulation including EPO use and/or blood transfusions."

Armstrong has never tested positive in any doping tests.

The news comes after the US federal government ended an investigation into doping allegations abruptly in February. The nearly two-year grand jury investigation was closed with no charges brought. The Food and Drug Adminstration's Jeff Novitzky had headed the investigation. Armstrong had welcomed the end of federal investigation earlier this year.

The Washington Post reported that Armstrong's attorney Robert D. Luskin called USADA's latest allegations a product of "malice and spite" on behalf of USADA, which for years has been seeking information on whether Armstrong doped. He pointed to all of Armstrong's passed drug tests and said the letter was a result of a conspiracy against Armstrong since several teams and riders are mentioned, but his client is the only one charged.

USADA has been conducting its own investigation separate from that done by the federal government. USADA has the authority to suspend dopers from competition in Olympic sports and it can take back awards, but it cannot press criminal charges.

The letter accuses not only Armstrong, but also five associates, including three doctors and team manager Johan Bruyneel. It says that they "engaged in a massive doping conspiracy from 1998-2011" and cites the testimony of more than 10 cyclists. Michele Ferrari is one of the named doctors.

In its letter, USADA says Armstrong used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone, corticosteroids and masking agents as well as distributed them and administered them to others.

Luskin reported that USADA had invited Armstrong to meet last week, but Armstrong chose not to do so.

USADA had previously said it would obtain information from the US Attorney's federal investigation once its case had closed. "Unlike the U.S. Attorney, USADA’s job is to protect clean sport rather than enforce specific criminal laws," Tygart had said in a statement.

Armstrong responds

On his website on Wednesday, Armstrong issued a statement in response to the USADA letter and allegations.

"I have been notified that USADA, an organization largely funded by taxpayer dollars but governed only by self-written rules, intends to again dredge up discredited allegations dating back more than 16 years to prevent me from competing as a triathlete and try and strip me of the seven Tour de France victories I earned. These are the very same charges and the same witnesses that the Justice Department chose not to pursue after a two-year investigation. These charges are baseless, motivated by spite and advanced through testimony bought and paid for by promises of anonymity and immunity. Although USADA alleges a wide-ranging conspiracy extended over more than 16 years, I am the only athlete it has chosen to charge. USADA's malice, its methods, its star-chamber practices, and its decision to punish first and adjudicate later all are at odds with our ideals of fairness and fair play.

"I have never doped, and, unlike many of my accusers, I have competed as an endurance athlete for 25 years with no spike in performance, passed more than 500 drug tests and never failed one. That USADA ignores this fundamental distinction and charges me instead of the admitted dopers says far more about USADA, its lack of fairness and this vendetta than it does about my guilt or innocence."

BLOCKUS

June 12, 2004By Gary Blockus Of The Morning Call

Losing a friend, a father, a husband, and a child are the darkest moments of our time on Earth, and last week, the Lehigh Valley bicycling community lost such an icon.Alaric Gayfer, a seven-time British national track cycling champion, lost his race against brain cancer.

"Up until sometime this winter, Alaric was still riding the Derby," racer and coach Gil Hatton said prior to last night's racing at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome. The Derby is a 30-mile training ride.

Alaric Gayfer, 1956-2004
By J. Alain Ferry

The cycling community has lost one if its heroes; Alaric Gayfer died June 8. Alaric was diagnosed with a grade IV brain tumor (glioblastoma, the worst kind) in October 2002.

Alaric was a very close friend; I will miss him dearly. He gave us all so many wonderful memories that will keep him close in spirit and thought forever. My sympathies go out to Alaric's wife Colleen and their daughter Brianna.

There will be a memorial service for Alaric at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome on Saturday, June 12 at 5:00pm.

Born in London, England, August 20, 1956, Alaric Gayfer was a seven-time British National Track Cycling Champion. He was head coach of the Air Products Developmental Cycling Program for 10 years at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome and director sportif of Future Champions Cycling Club, Trexlertown. He was also director sportif of East Coast Velo Cycling Club, Trexlertown, since its inception and a master mechanic for Mavic at the 1996 Summer Olympics, Atlanta, Ga.

It has been eight years today (June 8, 2012) since we lost Alaric. The loss is still felt strongly by those in the cycling community and all those that knew him. Alaric, Rest In Peace. You are not forgotten!

Jimbo2317 Flys in "Yankee Lady"

A young friend of mine, Jimbo2317, from Northampton, Pennsylvania went to the Reading Regional Airport on June 6, 2012, for the adventure of a lifetime.

Jimbo was one of a number of WWII enthusiast that paid big bucks to fly in a World War II B-17 Flying Fortress. The B-17 Flying Fortress was known as the "Yankee Lady". And what an adventure it was! Click on the link below to join Jimbo on his flight of a Lifetime. Oh, by the way, this is not the first time that Jim has flown on a WWII B-17.

Jimbo is an interesting young man with a passion for history. His interest are varied and admirable. His is a railroad buff, a photographer, a video photographer and film Editor. If it has to do with history, Jimbo is knee deep into it. It is rare to find someone of a young age that is so passionate about history and his other varied interest.

Hope you enjoy the flight withe Jimbo!

Josh Hamilton Hits Four Homeruns

When Josh Hamilton (Texas Rangers) hit four home runs against the Orioles on Tuesday, he became just the 16th man in baseball history to accomplish the feat. More men (21) have thrown perfect games. Hamilton's performance was even more impressive than that, however. When you factor in the fact that Hamilton went 5-for-5 on the night, mixing a double in among his four homers, it could be argued that his was one of the handful of best single-game hitting performances in major league history.

The two most important things a hitter can do, independent of his teammates, is avoid outs and hit for extra bases. Four home runs add up to 16 total bases. Since 1918, just five men have had more than 16 total bases in a game. Hamilton is one of them. Only one man has ever hit for more total bases in a single game than Hamilton's 18. That was Shawn Green, who collected 19 for the Dodgers in 2002. Meanwhile, of the 17 men to have produced 16 or more total bases in a single game since 1918, just eight did so without making an out.

Space Invasion By Facebook Coming Soon!

Facebook cranking up the revenue dial!

Facebook has big plans to go public with an initial public offering (IPO) in the spring of 2012. With a target of $100 Billion in valuation, FB has to find new revenue streams.

Up until recently FB's ads have been relegated to the right side of the sites pages. That is about to change! Real time updates and post from 'Friends' stream into the middle of the page and this area has been largely free of advertising. FB users concentrate their attention to the center of the screen largely ignoring the ads on the right side. With users focused in the real content is it any wonder that that is where advertisers want their messages to appear? And, FB is going to oblige them.

These ads will also stream to user's mobile devices. FB boasts 425 million users of its mobile application; a huge reservoir of untapped advertising inventory.

Will FB users stand for this new intrusion? Facebook will start slow, limiting the number of main stream ads, but how long will it be before they ramp it up to satisfy their advertisers and their new stock holders.?

These moves by FB could be a space invasion of significant magnitude to all current users.

Don't forget I warned you! If we do not object vehemently now, tomorrow will be too late!

BTW, You Twitter users; your facing the same thing. Twitter has introduced a new strategy which is quietly being introduced by management that will ad advertising to the main or center content on it's site.

And so it goes...

"One Day"

One day Evelyn passed away.

And on that clear, sunny morning,

In the stillness of her bedroom,

Everette was struck with the pain

that sometimes there just isn’t any more.

No more hugs or kisses.

No more expressions of Love.

No more lucky moments to celebrate together,

No more phone calls just to chit-chat,

No more "just one minute."

Sometimes, what we care about the most goes away

before we can say good-bye, before we can utter a final

"I Love You."

Gone, never to return...

Syd's World Record

Syd's World RecorPosted on February 8, 2012 by Bobby Lea

The big news of the week comes from my younger brother, Syd. This weekend he set a new indoor rowing world record for ID (intellectually disabled) athletes in the 1,000meter. His time of 3:18.1 eclipsed the previous record of 3:19.8 set by Tsui Kwok Man of Hong Kong.

Check out the photo of Syd and his coach/Dad right before setting the record.

Way to go, Syd!

Pete Gray, Memphis Chicks, 1944

It is strange how the human mind works. My father, who was born on January 28, 1908, died in 1984, at age 76, recently would have celebrated a Birthday, were he alive. Although it is certainly unusual to celebrate a Birthday of a person long since dead, I created a Memorial to him on this Blog because, of late, he has been much in my memory. My father had a profound influence on my life, as did my wonderful Mother.

On January 25, 2012, I celebrated my 76th Birthday with some trepidation. Perhaps that is why thoughts of my father are coming to mind! Last night I relived a moment in time as if I was watching a motion picture show. The year was 1944, the occasion was a Memphis Chicks Baseball game. The Memphis Chicks were a minor league team that actually were officially know as the "Memphis Chickadees." My father asked me if I would like to go to a Memphis Chicks baseball game? Would I? In 1944, I was eight years old; aside from the fact that was always ready and willing to go anywhere with my father, a Memphis Chicks baseball game was special.

For 1944, the Memphis Chicks had a decent ball field, located very close to downtown Memphis, it looked almost like a Major League stadium. It had the requisite fold down, slatted seats and the high overhanging roof so typical of stadiums of the time.

I don't recall who the Chicks were playing on that particular evening, but it really doesn't matter. My Hero, aside from my Dad, was playing in center field; Pete Gray.
Pete Gray was special, not only for his playing ability in the field and at the plate, but he was noted for the fact that he only had one arm.

At the age of six, Gray lost his right arm when he slipped off of a farmer's wagon and his arm became caught in the wagon’s wheel spokes. Too badly disfigured to be saved, the arm had to be amputated above the elbow. Undeterred, Gray (a longtime baseball fan) taught himself how to bat and field one-handed, catching the ball in his glove and then quickly removing his glove and transferring the ball to his hand in one fluid motion.

Pete Gray's .333 batting average and league-leading sixty-eight stolen bases earned him the Most Valuable Player award of the Southern Association in 1944 and the nickname the "One-Armed Wonder."

I am not going to repeat the statistics of his playing career here. Pete's dream was to play in the major leagues and in particular he dreamed of playing in Yankee Stadium in New York. In 1945, Pete Gray's contract was picked up by the St. Louis Browns and shortly thereafter he attained his dream of playing in Yankee Stadium.

Gray's major league career ended on V-J Day, 1945 when many of baseball's regular stars returned from the front. From 1946 to 1949, Gray bounced around as a journeyman player, working for a number of minor league and semi-pro organizations. Left to wonder if he had made the majors on his playing abilities or because of his one arm, Gray eventually gave up baseball in 1950 and returned home to Nanticoke, where he struggled with gambling and alcohol additions, living in near poverty for most of his post-baseball days. In 1986 the made for television-movie A Winner Never Quits and the publication of a 1995 biography renewed public interest in Gray and his playing career. Such attention helped to restore a sense of dignity to Gary’s career before his death in 2002.

In truth, I did not follow Pete Gray/s career after he left the Chicks in 1945, bit I remember those wonderful occasions when my father and I went out to the ballpark to watch the Memphis Chicks. Pete Gray was always an inspiration to me in the years that followed as I played baseball at age 11, 12 & 13. Back then it was a loosely organized group of independent teams put together by dedicated volunteer coaches that had to scrounge and borrow just to put uniforms on the kids that they could recruit. Little League Baseball was a long way off!

Thanks, Dad, for many wonderful memories and a wonderful childhood!

And so it goes...

Happy Birthday, DAD!

Happy Birthday Dad, Pap Paw, Father! You left us too soon, too young. You had so much more to give!

After all these years I still miss you and think about you often. Had it not been for you I would never have become the man that I am.

You were a kind, gentle, giving soul that nutured me from birth. You instilled the idea in me that it was my obligation to give back, to help those in need and those that were less fortunate.

You were the best father that a child could ask for. You didn't give me everything that I wanted, but you gave me more than I deserved. You were generous to a fault, loving, caring, and a marvelous role model. If my daughters consider me a "good" Dad, then I owe it all to you!

I often thought that I had failed to live up to your high standards, but you never gave me any reason to believe that! You expressed your love, encouraged me and supported me through out my life. You were there when I needed you, but you did not impose your will on me. You allowed me to find my own way, you allowed me to fail and when I failed, you were there for me, always!

Everette Sr. & Josephine "Jo" Carr

Everette Sr. & Everette Jr., January 1944

I truely miss you and wish that we would have had had more time together.

Grey-Haired Brigade...........

Grey-Haired Brigade...........

They like to refer to us as senior citizens, old fogies, geezers, and in some cases dinosaurs. Some of us are "Baby Boomers" getting ready to retire. Others have been retired for some time. We walk a little slower these days and our eyes and hearing are not what they once were. We have worked hard, raised our children, worshiped our God and grown old together. Yes, we are the ones some refer to as being over the hill, and that is probably true. But before writing us off completely, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration.

In school we studied English, history, math, and science which enabled us to lead America into the technological age. Most of us remember what outhouses were, many of us with firsthand experience. We remember the days of telephone party-lines, 25 cent gasoline, and milk and ice being delivered to our homes. For those of you who don't know what an icebox is, today they are electric and referred to as refrigerators. A few even remember when cars were started with a crank. Yes, we lived those days.

We are probably considered old fashioned and out-dated by many. But there are a few things you need to remember before completely writing us off. We won World War II, fought in Korea and Viet Nam . We can quote The Pledge of Allegiance, and know where to place our hand while doing so. We wore the uniform of our country with pride and lost many friends on the battlefield. We didn't fight for the Socialist States of America , we fought for the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave." We wore different uniforms but carried the same flag. We know the words to the Star Spangled Banner, America ,and America the Beautiful by heart, and you may even see some tears running down our cheeks as we sing. We have lived what many of you have only read about in history books and we feel no obligation to apologize to anyone for America .

Yes, we are old and slow these days but rest assured, we have at least one good fight left in us. We have loved this country, fought for it, and died for it, and now we are going to save it. It is our country and nobody is going to take it away from us. We took oaths to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that is an oath we plan to keep. There are those who want to destroy this land we love but, like our founders, there is no way we are going to remain silent.

It was mostly the young people of this nation who elected Obama and the Democratic Congress. You fell for the "Hope and Change" which in reality was nothing but "Hype and Lies." You have tasted socialism and seen evil face to face, and have found you don't like it after all. You make a lot of noise, but most are all too interested in their careers or "Climbing the Social Ladder" to be involved in such mundane things as patriotism and voting. Many of those who fell for the "Great Lie" in 2008 are now having buyer's remorse. With all the education we gave you, you didn't have sense enough to see through the lies and instead drank the 'Cool-Aid.' Now you're paying the price and complaining about it. No jobs, lost mortgages, higher taxes, and less freedom. This is what you voted for and this is what you got. We entrusted you with the Torch of Liberty and you traded it for a paycheck and a fancy house.

Well, don't worry youngsters, the Grey-Haired Brigade is here, and in 2012 we are going to take back our nation. We may drive a little slower than you would like but we get where we're going, and in 2012 we're going to the polls by the millions. This land does not belong to the man in the White House nor to the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. It belongs to "We the People" and "We the People" plan to reclaim our land and our freedom. We hope this time you will do a better job of preserving it and passing it along to our grandchildren. So the next time you have the chance to say the Pledge of Allegiance, Stand up, put your hand over your heart, honor our country, and thank God for the old geezers of the "Grey-Haired Brigade."

Footnote:

I am another Geezerly ol' curmudgeon signing on. I will circulate this to other Gray-Haired Geezers all over this once great county.

Can you feel the ground shaking???
It's not an earthquake, it is a STAMPEDE!
